A total of 22 members of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) were injured on Tuesday morning after the ZIL 130 truck they were traveling in was involved in a serious accident in the mountainous area of the municipality of Candelaria, in the province of Artemisa.
The vehicle, coming from Bahía Honda, lost control at kilometer 12 of the Soroa road, near the Mango Bonito area, as reported by Artemisa Diario.
The source noted that all the injured belong to the different bodies and lines of work of the Ministry of the Interior of Bahía Honda, that is to say, Special Brigade, PNR Sector Chiefs, MININT Chief, and investigators.
An impactful photo published by a witness in the Facebook group "Accidents Buses & Trucks" shows how the truck was crushed, apparently after overturning or rolling over on the road.
The official source indicated that the Comandante Pinares General Teaching Hospital in San Cristóbal received the twenty injured, who were assisted with the support of the Red Cross Operations and Relief Group.
The most delicate injured person is a 54-year-old man with a skull fracture, who is reported to be in serious but stable condition, and was transferred to the Calixto García Clinical Surgical Hospital in Havana, as stated by Yolani Torres, director of the hospital center.
Two other patients, one with an exposed patella fracture and another with a radius fracture, underwent surgical intervention by the Orthopedics Department of Comandante Pinares.
A fourth patient underwent finger amputation.
Two other injured persons remain hospitalized in the Surgery department, assessed as polytrauma patients, who are under Observation.
The rest of the people attended were discharged, as they had minor traumas, abrasions, and wounds that required stitching in some cases.
The official source indicated that immediately after the accident, the main officials of Public Health in the municipality and the province, the president of the Municipal Assembly of People's Power, heads of the Provincial Delegation of the Ministry of the Interior, the leadership of San Cristóbal, and other authorities were present.
Until the closing of this report, the identity of the wounded individuals who remain hospitalized has not been disclosed.
Accidents of all types have not let up on Cuban roads since the beginning of the year, following the same trend that was already set in 2023.
Last year, 729 people lost their lives in Cuba as a result of traffic accidents. Authorities recorded 8,556 road incidents that left 5,938 injured. The human factor was responsible for 91% of these events, authorities said.
