Ten people were injured, two of them seriously, after a truck carrying 25 workers from the Provincial Company of Road Maintenance and Construction of the Popular Power (ViaMAC) suffered an accident this Wednesday in the province of Sancti Spiritus.
The accident occurred on the morning of May 29 in the town of Iguará, in the municipality of Yaguajay, after the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, as reported on social media by Radio Fomento.
The workers, originally from the municipalities of Sancti Spiritus and Taguasco, were heading to carry out tasks related to the cleaning of green areas, as reported by La Voz de Yaguajay.
After the accident, the classified severe cases were immediately transferred to the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital in the head municipality, and five minor injuries are being treated at the Joaquín Paneca Consuegra Municipal Teaching Hospital in Yaguajay.
In an update on the case this Thursday, the local press reported that five injured individuals were referred to Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital, two of them with polytrauma and listed in critical condition, and the other three to be evaluated by specialists from that institution.
Two others were still in the observation room of the Joaquín Paneca Consuegra Teaching General Hospital, as stated to the press by Doctor Pedro Israel González, the center's director.
It was possible to establish as the cause of the accident the loss of control of the vehicle's steering, considered a violation of Article 102 of Law 109, as stated by Subteniente Jesús Valdivia Sierra, Criminalist Expert of the Yaguajay PNR Unit," concluded the source, which did not provide further details on the circumstances of the incident.
In another recent truck accident in Cuba, a group of 22 members of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) were injured on Tuesday morning after the ZIL 130 truck they were traveling in was involved in a serious accident in the mountainous area of Candelaria municipality, in the province of Artemisa.
Accidents of all kinds have not let up on Cuban roads since the beginning of the year, following the same trend that was already set in 2023.
Last year, 729 people lost their lives in Cuba as a result of traffic accidents. Authorities recorded 8,556 traffic incidents that left 5,938 injured. Human error was responsible for 91% of these incidents, the authorities stated.
