One of the two workers from the Varadero Oil Drilling and Extraction Company (EPEP) who inhaled toxic gases while fixing a gas leak underground, died this Friday, as reported by the entity on social media.

EPEP Varadero identified the victim as Renier García Gómez, who was serving as the head of Collector Center 7, describing him as a "young man dedicated to the oil industry."

The official source did not provide any other details about the circumstances of the worker's death.

However, a few hours ago, a post on social media was asking for Vitamin C injections for the young man who has now passed away.

"10 vials of Vitamin C are needed, which are out of stock at both Faustino Pérez and Cárdenas Hospital for the young man from the oil accident who inhaled toxic gas. His name is Renier García Gómez," the post said, providing a contact phone number.

Just as there are days when we meet people who become loved ones, there are also days when we have to say goodbye forever, as we do today to the young reserve player Renier García. His death will not only bring sadness to family and co-workers, but to all those who knew him throughout his life. Goodbye, colleague and friend. Rest in peace. To his family, our most sincere condolences," wrote the oil company in another farewell message.

It was this Thursday that the news was announced through the Cardenenses group on Facebook, where it was indicated that the victims of the accident were initially treated at the Santa Marta polyclinic, from there they were referred to Cárdenas, and finally to a hospital in the main town.

According to previous unofficial reports, the young people were reported as being in serious condition, but at least one of them showed some improvement.

In March, the Cuban government reported that the number of work-related accidents in Cuba decreased in 2023 but the fatality rate remained at the same levels as in 2022.

In a report entitled "Labor Protection. Selected Indicators," the state National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicated that a total of 1,491 workplace accidents occurred on the island between January and December 2023.

The mortality rate, which represents the number of deaths per 1,000 injured, increased from 30.3 to 33.8 points; especially due to incidents in Agriculture, Construction, and Electricity, Gas, and Water Supply.
