Specialized personnel from the fire department and workers from the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant (CTE) in Matanzas managed to extinguish the fire that broke out this morning in a fuel tank at the facility.
Until now, the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant continues in operation. The fire in one of its fuel tanks is being controlled by the firefighters, as reported by the CTE of Matanzas on its social media.
According to their publication, "thanks to the operation of their fire prevention system, all protective measures are in place, and adjacent tanks are being cooled."
Sand trucks are creating a containment barrier in case of a spill. The majority of their workers have been evacuated, and others are on-site to provide necessary assistance," stated the giant company from Matanzas.
On the other hand, the official journalist Pedro Rizo Martínez specified that the fire was located "in one of the 10-cubic-meter tanks of national crude oil" of the Guiteras and reported that emergency services and top authorities were at the scene.
"In the morning hours, a fire broke out in one of the fuel supply tanks at the Guiteras CTE. Currently, specialized firefighters and power plant workers are on site extinguishing the fire. Measures are being taken to prevent the machinery from shutting down and to avoid further technological damage in addition to what is happening in the fuel tank," the UNE reported on its social media accounts after the fire was declared.
On the other hand, in a recent publication, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, stated that "total control had already been achieved over the fire that occurred this morning in the fuel tank of the CTE Guiteras."
In recent days, a fire broke out in the areas of brushland near the Supertanker Base of Matanzas and the Rayonitro company, close to Guiteras. The point of origin of the fire was behind the water tanks. According to authorities, the area was far from where the new tanks are being built.
However, both incidents that occurred within a short period of time bring to the memory of residents of Matanzas the fateful accident at the Supertankers Base, which took place at sunset on August 5, 2022, when -according to the official version of the authorities- lightning struck a tank containing 40 thousand gallons of fuel.
The flames spread to three other storage tanks containing fuel oil and crude oil from the refinery in Matanzas Bay. The fire was active for several days and left 17 people dead (some of whom were young recruits from the Active Military Service) and over a hundred injured.
