The young Cuban TikToker Alejandro Buján landed on the internet with one of his usual videos about curiosities or peculiarities of the Spanish spoken on the island.
On this occasion, he referred to "Cuban expressions with food," which "have to do with everything but food."
Buján begins by alluding to the challenging task of explaining to "a gringo" that the word "guayaba" not only refers to the fruit, but also to a lie, and that, furthermore, "if you are guayabero, it's not that you like guavas, but that you are a tremendous liar," precisely alluding to the difference between the literal and figurative use of this word.
Another expression mentioned is "mango," which in Cuba is used to describe a very attractive person. Buján illustrates how the phrase "tremendo mango" is used to refer to someone physically attractive.
In his video, the young man also addresses the use of "ñame," which, although it refers to a tuber, in Cuban slang is used to describe a clumsy or unintelligent person.
"Boniato" is another term that she included in her list, because besides being a sweet potato, it is also used when someone stumbles, in which case they pull a boniato out, it is not planted.
"Meterle a alguien un pan con yuca" or to be a "chupa tamarindo" are some of the phraseologies included in his interesting, fresh, and fun video that has won over the hearts of the internet.
