Cubans and Venezuelans star in a funny video: "Do we eat now or in a little while?"

Now or later? Two Cubans and two Venezuelans demonstrate their cultural differences when discussing this topic.

Two Cubans and two Venezuelans star in a humorous video that arises from a misunderstanding about the use of the terms "now" and "right now".

A user named Oscar the Teacher shared on Facebook the funny situation in which Venezuelans suggest going out to eat.

The Cubans respond affirmatively, suggesting to go "now". Surprised, the Venezuelans, who are hungry, reply saying they prefer to go "right now".

"Not right now, in a bit," one of the Cubans replied. "Right now is like in an hour," they said.

"Right now, it's already, there is a lot of hunger," answered the Venezuelan.

At that moment, everyone realizes the confusion: for Cubans, "now" means doing something immediately, while "ahorita" implies doing it in the near future.

On the contrary, for Venezuelans, as well as for other cultures like the Mexican culture, the meanings are inverted: "ahorita" refers to doing something immediately, while "ahora" can mean doing it later.

"One of the Venezuelans pointed out, 'The word itself says it: "Now" (a hora) is later, in one hour, and "ahorita" is now.'"

And while they tried to come to an agreement, even convince each other, the Venezuelan said, "I'm not hungry anymore."

The cultural differences between Cubans and Venezuelans, in terms of language, are notable.

There are also those associated with culinary traditions. For example, what Cubans call black beans, Venezuelans know as "caraotas." In addition, Venezuelans usually eat them with spaghetti and cheese, a combination that is unimaginable for those born on the Caribbean island.

In that same vein, bread with tomato - which drives Cubans crazy - is an "unusual" combination for Venezuelans.

This became evident in a video shared on TikTok, where a man expressed his bewilderment at his Cuban wife's taste for this unusual combination of bread with tomato and olive oil.
