A Cuban citizen suffered serious injuries on Tuesday in a traffic accident between a van and a car at kilometer 160 of Route 3, in the department of Flores, Uruguay.

According to the local news outlet Subrayado, both vehicles collided head-on, and the crash resulted in three fatalities. The individual born on the island - whose name is still unknown - was the sole survivor and was urgently transported to the city of Trinidad.

A 51-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman who were traveling in the car died at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck also lost his life, a man whose age has not been reported yet, as mentioned on the digital page before adding that the Cuban man is 39 years old, according to the police report.

The incident occurred just as thousands of Cubans in that country are seeking to resolve their migratory status, following the decree signed by the Uruguayan government to grant them legal status.

After several years demanding actions from President Luis Lacalle Pou to be granted residency, Cubans and immigrants of other nationalities can finally obtain it through the "residency by roots."

However, several Cubans have been involved in fatal accidents in that territory in the last five years.

In 2019, a Cuban died while performing home delivery services for the company PedidosYa, aboard a motorcycle; while in 2021, another lost his life when his motorcycle collided with a cargo trailer in the city of Lascano, to the north of the department of Rocha.
