A severe bed bug infestation was reported at the nursing home in the municipality of Manzanillo, in the Cuban province of Granma.

The situation has been publicly denounced by the relatives of the inmates, who claim that the elderly have been suffering the consequences of this infection for months, as stated in a Facebook post by internet user Lucía Martínez Carrazana.

She comments that despite the fact that the plague has been reported to all institutions in the municipality and the province, including Public Health, the Government, the Party, and the departments of Hygiene and Epidemiology, no effective action has been taken to solve the problem.

According to the complainant, even the Department of Elderly Care in the province is aware of the case, but so far they have not provided a solution.

The governor of Manzanillo has mentioned the need to relocate the elderly to another place for fumigation and maintenance of the home, which is in a serious state of disrepair. However, every week a new excuse arises, and the problem persists without being resolved.

The proliferation at home is in all beds and rooms....THERE ARE MILLIONS OF THESE BUGS....THEY ARE EATING THEM ALIVE," the internet user emphasized.

However, the director and the physician at the home have downplayed the situation, stating that the bites do not pose a significant health risk to the patients.

However, bedbugs, known as "the silent killer," can transmit the parasite T. cruzi, the cause of Chagas disease. This disease can remain in the human body for up to 97 days and cause cardiac, neurological, and digestive problems, which can lead to sudden death.

The provided images show a patient in bed with hundreds of bites on their thighs, knees, and legs, highlighting the seriousness of the infestation. The infestation of bed bugs affects all beds and rooms in the home, with millions of these insects present, according to the family members of the residents.

The relatives of the elderly make an urgent call for immediate action to protect the approximately 165 elderly people residing in this home from the bedbug infestation.

In recent months, infestations of bedbugs have been reported in schools and health centers in several provinces in the eastern part of the country, especially in Santiago de Cuba, Granma, and Holguín.
