The National Police arrested a 57-year-old man in the city of Manises, Valencia, accused of forging official documents so that Cuban citizens could obtain Spanish nationality.
According to the information published by the newspaper ABC, the detained individual would have scammed a foreigner by offering help to obtain a driver's license in Spain, for which he pretended to conduct a fake practical exam and delivered a forged license. For this fake license, he charged 4,000 euros.
After the arrest, the police found documentation, several laptops, a printer, a document shredder, over 50 Cuban passports, as well as 1,750 euros in cash and various stamps from public agencies.
An official statement specified that the investigation into this case began in April, following the complaint of a foreign citizen who claimed to have been defrauded in the procedures to obtain a driver's license.
The detainee, of Spanish nationality, acted in collusion with other Cuban citizens. He charged the victim 4,000 euros, gave him a fake medical certificate, organized driving practices and a simulated practical exam, and ultimately handed over a counterfeit driver's license.
The alleged main perpetrator was also involved in obtaining residence and Spanish nationality documentation for Cuban citizens fraudulently.
The accused resided in Manises and used his vehicle to carry out the alleged driving practices.
In mid-June, a device was set up for their location and arrest.
The suspect was intercepted as he was speeding out of his garage. Inside the vehicle, a backpack was found containing various documentation, including a Spanish passport belonging to a deceased person, a Cuban passport, civil registry documentation, and stamps from public agencies.
During the search of his home, more documentation related to birth and death certificates of deceased Cuban and Spanish individuals was found, along with another laptop, three USB drives, a photocopier, a document shredder, a packaging machine, a laminator, and 1,750 euros in cash, the information details.
Authorities also found five suitcases and various boxes filled with similar documentation, all related to procedures to obtain Spanish nationality for Cuban citizens.
With this documentation, the detainee proved that the individuals were children or grandchildren of Spaniards, thus facilitating naturalization.
According to the statement, the man already had a criminal record for similar offenses, and was brought before the courts accused of belonging to a criminal group, document forgery, and fraud.
The judge has ordered his release with a precautionary measure of prohibition from leaving the national territory.
