The explosion of an electric motorcycle caused a fire and the collapse of part of a house in the city of Camagüey, on Tuesday morning, with no reported victims.
The house located at 585 Pobres Street, between San Esteban and Jaime, in the historic center of the city, caught fire after a motorcycle battery exploded while it was charging, next to a gasoline-powered motorcycle, reported the Cuban journalist Henry Constantín, director of the independent media outlet La Hora de Cuba.
The living room in the house burned completely and the roof collapsed, Constantín specified. In addition to destroying the moped, the fire wrecked the gasoline motorcycle, which "surely, because it had fuel, increased the pressure force," he explained.
Fortunately, none of the residents were injured. They were all awake at the time of the explosion and managed to escape through the back of the house.
A witness told the news outlet that the firefighters took half an hour to arrive, even though the station is located a kilometer and a half from the site where the incident occurred.
Last June, two fires that broke out in homes due to the explosion of electric motorcycle batteries turned into a tragedy by causing the death of family members.
At the beginning of that month, a couple and their 21-year-old son lost their lives in an accident that occurred in the early hours at their home in Playa.
Two weeks later, the explosion of another motor scooter in Havana caused a fire that resulted in the death of a couple and serious injuries to the three children of the couple. The 9-year-old boy passed away after several days in critical condition.
A family from Alamar lost all their belongings in a fierce fire in the apartment where they lived.
Meanwhile, a short circuit caused a fire in the Girón building in Vedado, Havana, where no casualties were reported.
