Ángel Luis Hernández Batista, a 49-year-old Cuban who had been sentenced at the end of 2023 for drug trafficking, was murdered on Wednesday night in the city of Ajaccio, on the French island of Corsica, in an action apparently linked to organized crime.
Around 11:30 p.m. on July 10, Ángel Luis Hernández was attacked by two hooded gunmen while he was riding his scooter near his house. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers then fled in a vehicle.
The car was found charred shortly after near the marine cemetery. Inside the car, a charred automatic weapon was found, which reinforces the hypothesis of a premeditated action by organized crime.
The prosecutor in charge of the case, Nicolás Septe, detailed in statements collected by the local press that the characteristics of the crime left no doubts about the preparation of the homicide and asserted that the victim was ambushed.
The ambush took place on the Route of the Bloodthirsty, a residential area in Ajaccio.
The investigation focuses on Hernandez's criminal environment and possible settling of scores related to drug trafficking.
The victim died at the scene due to their injuries. Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene but were unable to save their life.
Native of Matanzas and born on November 12, 1974, Ángel Luis Hernández Batista had started a hospitality business in 2015, a business that he closed in 2023 after his conviction for drug trafficking.
Hernández, nicknamed "el Cubano" because of his origins, had been in prison until recently when a sentence adjustment allowed him to access parole.
Local authorities and the community in Ajaccio are shocked by the murder of Hernández.
The investigation of the murder was entrusted to the division against organized crime of the interdepartmental directorate of the national police of Southern Corsica (DIPN 2A).
The Interregional Specialized Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille, which specializes in cases related to organized crime, was also informed of the events and is collaborating in the investigation.
Authorities expect that the autopsy of the victim, scheduled for the end of this week, will provide more details about the attack and help progress in the resolution of the case.
The police have intensified their efforts to identify and capture those responsible, with the support of the JIRS in Marseille.
