The security guard of a foreign currency store in the Bahía (Guiteras) neighborhood, in eastern Havana, was found dead this Tuesday, and allegedly was murdered while working, according to preliminary reports on digital platforms.

The victim was a security guard at El Rocío store, in that neighborhood of Havana del Este municipality, was 51 years old, and his body was found in the morning, but not inside the commercial establishment, but in a dumpster, as reported by crime reporter Niover Licea on social media.

According to people who knew him, the deceased was named Efrén and lived in the municipality of Regla.

In its first crime report, Licea revealed chilling details. "They threw him in a dumpster and placed a machete next to him. Apparently, he was severely beaten and may have been tortured," he described.

It is presumed that "they entered the store to steal and, unfortunately, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time" and "they beat him," he pointed out.

The reporter specified that, despite being found in the morning, the victim's body was not removed until around 2:00 in the afternoon.

"The relatives and people who knew him demand justice," Licea emphasized, calling for an urgent investigation to determine what happened.

He also commented on the increase in violence, crimes, and robberies in the country, stating that the population has been abandoned to their fate by the authorities.

"Cuba is no longer a safe place, that was yesterday's news," he said, pointing out the neglect, inefficiency, and corruption of the police and other law enforcement agencies that are failing to ensure public safety.

A post in a Facebook group of El Rocío store customers also revealed the gruesome event. According to one person's comment, the man was murdered with machetes.

The body of the security guard was wake on Tuesday night at the funeral home in Regla, said a neighbor in the comments on the YouTube video. However, she pointed out that the wake was delayed because there was no hearse to transport it, a problem that has become common in Cuba and is part of the crisis in funeral services throughout the country.

"It's very painful, his name was Efrén, he was my neighbor and dearly loved by everyone, he is from here, from the municipality of Regla. What great sadness, last night I was at the funeral home with all the neighbors and family members, and by 11 o'clock at night, his body had not arrived because there was no hearse to transport him. We are all truly devastated," said the woman, who identified herself as Indara Reyes.

Another person claimed that in Guanabacoa, a man suspected of being the author of the crime was arrested, but that information has not been confirmed at this time.

Shocked by the crime, several Cubans have expressed their concern and fear about the insecurity in the country due to the crime rate.

"There is no longer peace, it is very sad what we are experiencing," a young woman lamented on Facebook. "What a great thing, the things that are happening, it's impossible to live like this, you can't even go out to the healthcare center at night because it's very dark, the neighborhood is dark and very dangerous, what horror," was the sentiment of another woman living in Bahía.

Just a week ago, the murder of another security guard shook the city of Santiago de Cuba. Miguel, who was the security guard at the notary office located on San Pedro Street, between San Basilio and Santa Lucía, was found dead with signs of violence indicating a homicide.
