A family living in precarious conditions in the Altavista neighborhood, near the Abel Santamaría District in Santiago de Cuba, lost their home in a fire that occurred this weekend.
A video shared on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta showed the moment when firefighters were spraying water with a hose, but it was clear that they had not managed to arrive in time to extinguish the fire.
In the comments section of Mayeta Labrada's post, neighbors of the family revealed that the affected family has three underage children.
"They have three children under 10 years old, and everything burned down. Absolutely nothing could be saved because the fire started from the meter, and with electricity, none of us could throw water or anything," explained the internet user Ailen Muchuly, who apparently witnessed the tragic event.
Muchuly explained that, in the case of electricity, the neighbors could not help extinguish the fire for fear that someone would get electrocuted.
"They had to wait for the firefighters, and when they arrived, it was already too late," she concluded.
Several people have requested help for the family, which has been left with nothing.
"I lived the fire up close because I am their neighbor. Please help, they have lost everything. There was no time to do anything. It all happened very quickly. This young couple has three small children and they have to start from scratch," wrote Yunalquis Allardes on social media.
In recent months, there have been several reported fires in homes in Santiago de Cuba.
Last week, another fire in the municipal seat of the province left at least two families with damage to their homes, although in that case there were no injuries either.
The fire broke out around 10:40 p.m. on July 17 in a house owned by four brothers, although fortunately there was no one in the property at the time of the incident. Three rooms suffered the most material damage. The front door of the house was broken down by neighboring residents, and according to witnesses, there was no electricity flowing in the home.
In that fire, the house of Lázaro Cuquet Piñón was also damaged, who witnessed another serious fire 42 years ago in which his parents, grandparents, and a sister lost their lives, as revealed on social media by Aris Arias Batalla. Cuquet Piñón survived that occasion because he jumped out of the front window of the house.
The dramatic thing is that the fire that originated that time from the explosion of two liquefied gas cylinders occurred now in the same house, which this time was left with partial damage after an incident that started in the neighboring house.
Officials from the Municipal Administration Council (CAM) and other state agencies such as housing, physical planning, community services, and others appeared at the site.
