On the afternoon of this Tuesday, a short circuit in the electrical connections of a building caused a fire on the third floor of the "La Campiña" shelter community, in the Cerro municipality of Havana, as reported by Cubanet.
Although there were no serious injuries or fatalities, the smoke from the fire quickly filled the entire facility, leading to the evacuation of residents, some showing symptoms of asphyxiation.
Images shared by the mentioned media showed the moments of anguish experienced by those sheltered at the site, as well as the deployment of firefighters and police amid great anticipation from local residents.
To make matters worse, a police patrol that tried to serve as an ambulance for a victim with difficulty breathing collided with another car, thwarting the transfer, according to the independent portal.
After the arrival of the firefighters, the fire was extinguished. In the evening, the electric company began assessing the damages.
The damaged property is located on Ferrer Street, between Calzada del Cerro and Manila.
Until the publication of this note, there are no other confirmed details about what happened.
The number of people who experienced symptoms of asphyxia has not been disclosed, nor has it been confirmed whether the building is uninhabitable or if the affected individuals can continue living in it.
This is not the first fire caused by a short circuit in a building in Havana in recent weeks.
On June 22, the emblematic Edificio Girón, located at Malecón and F, suffered a partial fire that caused a significant mobilization of firefighters in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality.
In that case, the day after the incident, the municipal government issued an official statement to detail the situation of the property, a text that left several questions open regarding the management and the lack of transparency surrounding the incident.
