An accident that occurred this Saturday in Pinar del Río resulted in the death of a young man and several injuries after a bus overturned while heading to the beach of Cayo Jutías, on the northern coast of the westernmost province of Cuba.
A post in the Facebook group 'Buses & Trucks Accidents' indicated that the accident occurred "in Viñales" and that the bus was "a Diana that was going to Cayo Jutías beach."
Photographs shared on the mentioned site showed the bus overturned on the side of the road. A tow truck was sent to the location to remove it from the brush where it had been overturned on its side.
In one of the images, the deceased can be seen covered with a sheet on the road. In the comments on the post, a user stated that the deceased was an 18-year-old young man from Pinar del Río. The moderator of the Facebook group confirmed the young man's death and added that "four injured" had been reported in the incident.
At the time of writing this, neither the authorities who arrived at the scene nor the local official press have reported the tragic event. The identity of the deceased victim, the injured parties, and the causes of the accident are unknown.
Initially designed to serve in interurban areas, the Diana buses (nationally produced) have a capacity of 28 seated passengers and 15 standing. Equipped with a single door, these vehicles were conceived for transit on narrow roads due to their small dimensions.
"Those Girón buses are useless. Luckily it happened in that stretch. If it had been in a ravine area, the world would have ended," observed a netizen in the comments.
In early April, the driver of a bus died after crashing into a house on the La Coloma highway in Pinar del Río.
The accident occurred at km 7 of the road to La Coloma. The bus was traveling to the provincial capital when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a house.
"Today, an excellent friend, father, neighbor, driver, and also a founding member of this Family of 'Chóferes de Ómnibus por Siempre' leaves this world, a victim of a fatal accident. What sad news!" wrote a user in that group.
The post was supported by various comments expressing sorrow over the departure of this driver. According to accounts of the events, the bus was heading to the provincial capital, Pinar del Río, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a house.
A year earlier, a driver was seriously injured after his truck overturned when it left a secondary road at a curve in the vicinity of the municipality of Minas de Matahambre, in the province of Pinar del Río.
A witness of the accident posted several photographs on social media, showing a flipped red truck on the side of a secondary road in a rural area with a lot of vegetation.
