“Accident at Santa Catalina and Boyeros. The company Aguas de la Habana broke the street to make a repair and, as always, [did not place] any signage informing of work on the road,” reported a user in the Facebook group Automobile Accidents in Cuba.

Images shared by the user allowed us to see the magnitude of the incident, with the car completely damaged after having fallen into the ditch. As indicated by the reporter, there is no signage at the site alerting about the condition of the road.

At the time of writing this note, neither the authorities nor the state media have reported on what happened. The reasons why the car ended up in the ditch are unclear, beyond the lack of signs or barriers that would have prevented it.

In the comments on the post, many drivers criticized the lack of proper signage, and some suggested that the car might have been speeding. Almost everyone agreed that no one would pay for the damages to the car owner.

This is not the first time that the company Aguas de la Habana has undertaken works in public areas without placing warning signs, which is why similar accidents have occurred.

In October 2022, a car fell into a huge ditch at the intersection of Vento and Aranguren streets, in the Cerro municipality, which witnesses claimed had been dug by the Empresa Aguas de La Habana.

"That is at Vento and Aranguren, a hole that Aguas de La Habana opened one day when they installed the pipeline that supplies the neighborhood La Guayaba and never closed," clarified a user in the mentioned Facebook group.

Several forum users commented that the driver of the vehicle had surely never been through the area, as the ditch had been there for a long time. "That hole is already part of the heritage of that street, I'm tired of seeing it," said one of the commentators.

In May of that same year, a truck from Comunales fell into a huge trench dug by Aguas de La Habana in the Dolores neighborhood, located in the area known as Caballo Blanco.

"Drivers should not have to face such risks. The work is finished as soon as possible and properly marked, and only then can these disasters be avoided," said a user of the aforementioned Facebook group.

The author of the post questioned the condition of the street, full of mud and water due to the rain and the debris left by Aguas de La Habana, which completely buried the hole.

"In that stretch, there are more than four holes. It's a trench over 100 meters long filled with mud and covered in muddy water (the perfect recipe for disaster), and just around the next corner, there's another hole buried in soft mud where more than one has gotten stuck, and that one has been like that for years, and they still haven't fixed it," he detailed.
