A motorized police officer - commonly known as "caballitos" - died on the afternoon of this Friday in a traffic accident in the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo, in Holguín.

A post in the Facebook group Accidentes Buses & Camiones indicated that the accident involved the deceased officer and a truck, and that it occurred in the area known as "Curva del Carpintero," on the Levisa - Sagua road.

A couple of shared photos allowed us to see the crashed motorcycle and a red truck.

Another post in the Facebook group Noticias de Sagua de Tánamo identified the deceased victim as Orlando Moreno Almaguer, who was known as "La Picúa."

"Yesterday, Friday, August 9, was a sad day for us. We lost a brother, friend, father, and unconditional companion, Orlando Moreno Almaguer. He always set an example for us with his attitude and personality to follow him," wrote Yaniuris Borges in another post, a text that was shared in a local Facebook group.

Although there are no details about the causes and circumstances of the fatal accident, in the comments section of the post, a user pointed out that the incident was triggered by the "pursuit of a Toyotero who fled."

Orlando Moreno Almaguer resided in Levisa and apparently was the leader of the caballitos from Mayarí to Moa, according to another commenter.

Several internet users reacted to commentators who were reluctant to mourn the death of a police officer.

"So much pain. I knew Orlando, he was a non-commissioned officer in the FAR and then moved to the 'motorizada'. I believe that, although many do not appreciate the work of traffic agents, it is not a reason to somehow rejoice in the death of any of them. They are also human beings, who have family, children, parents, siblings, a wife, etc.," wrote an internet user.

"If you want to get along well with the traffic agents, just do what you're supposed to and you'll see that you won't have any problems with them. My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to all your family and friends. Rest in peace, my friend," he added.

"Orlando could be a very demanding agent, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a human being, imperfect like everyone else, but above all, he was a family man, whose family is now grieving his 'stupid departure from this cruel and unjust world,' another person stated."

As of the closing of this report, there are no other confirmed details about the incident, which adds to the list of fatalities in a summer that is turning out to be grim on Cuban roads.

At the end of July, two more agents from the motorcycle unit died in an accident, in that case in the province of Camagüey.
