A fourth person who was traveling in the almond-shaped vehicle that crashed on August 10 in Mayarí, in the province of Holguín, died this Monday, as reported by journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo on social media.

The most recent fatal victim was Maritza Paredes Martínez, 57 years old, who lived in the town of Cabonico, in Mayarí.

The report indicates that Paredes Martínez -who was treated at the Clinical Surgical Hospital of Holguín- was in critical condition after suffering a "splenic rupture in the second phase" and having fluid in the abdominal cavity.

In the first publication following the incident, Rodríguez Pupo had stated that Maritza Paredes had "a fracture of the pelvis and femur," but apparently her condition worsened afterwards.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when a Chevrolet vehicle crashed into a tree for unknown reasons on the road that connects the neighborhoods of Arroyo Blanco and El Solibano.

Following the strong impact, Yendri Saldaña Díaz (40 years old) and Alexander Santiago González Vera (52) died on the spot, and six other people were injured, including two children.

The mother of the minors - identified as Yanet Rojas Ramírez - was transferred to the Lucía Íñiguez Clinical Surgical Hospital, where she died a few hours later after suffering an abdominal trauma and shortly after undergoing surgery.

His children, Lázaro Ávila Rojas (8 years old) and Lisbeth Ávila Rojas (6 years old), are being cared for at the Pediatric Hospital of Holguín by their dad and an aunt.

Both are out of danger, although the girl suffered a fracture in her femur that will require medical follow-up.

The other survivors of this incident are Dailín Machado and Yurixan Ortiz Benítez.

Dailín Machado has a skull injury and occipital fracture, and the doctors are evaluating a new surgery.

Yurixan Ortiz Benítez, 34 years old and a resident of Levisa, has a rib fracture that is not life-threatening and is being treated at the Mayarí hospital.

Experts from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) are investigating the causes that led to the accident, although no official information has been released so far.

As of the closing of this note, there are no other confirmed details about the tragic incident, which adds to the list of fatalities in a summer that is proving to be dark on Cuban roads.

In one of the most recent events, a motorcycle police officer died last Friday in another traffic accident in Holguín, in this case in the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo.
