Followers and fans of the Las Tunas baseball team, champions of the last National Series of baseball in Cuba, spontaneously raised more than 400,000 Cuban pesos (CUP) as a tribute to the glory achieved by the players.
"Unpublished: followers of the Champions of Cuba raised more than 400 thousand pesos as a gift for the Lumberjacks," announced on Facebook the broadcaster Magdiel Pérez Labrada, one of the best-known faces in radio and television, who left the island in 2022.
Approval comments came quickly. "They certainly deserve it, that and more. It is a way for their people, who follow them, love them, and support them, to give back a little of those joys, those moments, and those emotions they have made us live," noted a supporter of the team.
"That is love for your team, congratulations to my team, we truly love you, that's why we suffer so much when you lose and we are also demanding to the point that we go overboard," pointed out another fan.
While another person indicated that "they deserve that and more for their sacrifice, selflessness, and humility. They have earned the affection, respect, and admiration of their people who follow them with loyalty and love."
In the Official Gazette of December 10, 2020, a series of measures were announced regarding the baseball players participating in the main spectacle of the Island, concerning prizes and salaries in the National Series based on individual results.
In this way, it had been stipulated that, in accordance with the collective results for the athletes and the management team, they would be rewarded based on the team's final position in the National Series: the Champion Team, 65,000 CUP; Second Place, 45,000 CUP; and Third Place, 30,000 CUP.
Less than a month ago, Las Tunas won the final playoff of Cuban baseball against the team from Pinar del Río, which until that moment had the best performance of the season and was considered the favorite. However, the tuneros won with an overall score of 4-1, reaffirming themselves as the legitimate king of Cuban baseball today.
