The Leñadores of Las Tunas could reconquer the crown of Cuban baseball this Saturday, after defeating the Vegueros of Pinar del Río on Friday and putting the series 3-0 in their favor.
Backed by their fans at the Julio Antonio Mella stadium in the provincial capital, the team won the third game of the Cuban baseball final with a score of 5-2 and is now just one victory away from achieving the championship title for the second time.
At this moment, the fourth game is taking place in their own backyard, which gives them an undeniable advantage.
If they win the match, they would sweep and beat their opponent in the final of the 63rd National Series of Baseball for the second consecutive year. Last year, Las Tunas swept against the Industriales Lions 4-0.
In the third meeting, the Leñadores scored three runs in the opening inning against the starter Bladimir Baños, who could only record one out.
A double in the fourth episode by Roberto Baldoquín, his third hit of the day, brought Yunieski Larduet home for the fourth run of the reigning national champions against the pitches of the left-handed Randy Martínez, the Vegueros' first reliever.
The Lumberjacks’ pitcher Alejandro Meneses remained airtight for five innings in which he did not allow any runs.
However, his replacement Rodolfo Díaz allowed in the sixth inning the 27th home run of Willian Saavedra in the playoffs, with which he tied for the historical lead in postseason home runs with the legendary Omar Linares.
However, the tuneros quickly regained the four-run lead at the end of the inning through Larduet, after a wild pitch from the pitcher Yancarlos García.
Alexander Urquiola's team, neutralized almost entirely in the offensive aspect, scored a run in the seventh inning, bringing the game to 5-2.
With this victory, the eastern team will seek to win their third championship in Cuban baseball on this Saturday's game.
