A person lost their life in a mass vehicle accident that occurred this Friday night in the city of Guantánamo, in Eastern Cuba.

This was reported by the official government social media profile Miguel Noticias, which specified that "a person over 40 years old" had lost their life in the incident, caused by a rental car for tourism with license plate T033519.

"A tourist car swerved to avoid a bicycle, jumped onto the sidewalk where people were sitting, and crashed into infrastructures (pole, benches) located at Martí and the Avenue, injuring everyone who was sitting there," the informant noted on Facebook.

Camilo Cienfuegos Avenue in Guantánamo is one of the most central and features a central promenade or walkway with trees, sculptures, and benches where locals often sit to cool off on summer nights and during blackouts.

According to Miguel Noticias, "several people were affected in the incident," but the number of victims was not specified. Some of them "present eye and orthopedic injuries (tibia fracture and hip fracture)."

"Unfortunately, a person over 40 years old has passed away," said the official journalist Miguel Reyes Mendoza, known for his social media profile Miguel Noticias. The identity of the deceased was not revealed in the report.

Its publication received several comments that drew attention to the prevailing darkness on the Avenue and "the whole area."

"Those central streets need lighting, but well, with the 'deficit' they want to save so much that they don’t realize these things, for God's sake," pointed out a netizen.

"That's right: Paseo, Ahogado, and the Avenue are very busy streets, they shouldn't turn off the streetlights. Those traffic lights being off at night are truly a horror," another agreed.

"I was with my family on the same bench, shocked, but on the other corner. We were saved from a tragedy by just a few meters, my grandmother, a 13-year-old cousin, my girlfriend, and I. We were close to the two boys who were run over. The entire avenue was dark. It's one of the factors of the tragic accident," said a witness to the events.

At the beginning of August, a serious accident occurred in Loma Las Marianas, in the Guantanamo municipality of San Antonio del Sur, leaving 23 people injured, including five children. The incident involved a tractor transporting all personnel on board. The victims of the accident suffered injuries of varying degrees.

In mid-May, a traffic accident in Guantánamo resulted in one person deceased and another injured after a collision between a vintage car and a motorcycle in the same locality of San Antonio del Sur.

At the end of April, a tragic traffic accident occurred in Guantánamo involving a truck and a motorcycle, resulting in the death of the motorcyclist. The deceased was identified as David Pileta and was a collector for the electric company.

Days earlier, an elderly man was injured in an accident involving a motorcycle and a bicycle in Guantánamo. The incident occurred at the intersection of Pedro A. Pérez and Varona streets, and the man was taken by ambulance to a medical facility.
