What happened at the cement factory in Cienfuegos?
Ernesto Gálvez, Production Director of the Cienfuegos cement factory, specified that the incident occurred after the collapse of a hopper, which caused a spill of very hot material, leading to the death of Raimundo Narcio Sarría and serious burns to the injured.
"At 2:05 p.m., the flour hopper [sic] of the electrofilter of furnace three collapsed. This collapse caused a spill of hot flour, which was what triggered the undesirable accident," Gálvez explained in statements to the Perlavisión television center.
"We are still investigating the cause of the events, of the hopper collapse," added the executive, who took the opportunity to clarify that there was no explosion of a boiler, as they do not use "boilers."
"We use solid fuel. We do not generate steam nor do we have boilers in the plant," he pointed out.
Ernesto Gálvez indicated that in order to ensure safety and considering the high temperature of the spilled material, the debris collection was not scheduled until the morning of this Wednesday.
Gálvez indicated that they hope to restore normal operations at the plant with the help of specialized technical forces from the province and the country, but he did not mention when the plant could be operational again.
They are: Dionel Figueroa Calunga, 52 years old, 70% burns, reported as critically extreme; Francisco Díaz Urquiza, 60 years old, 24% burns, reported as very serious; Hermes Rojas Campos, 52 years old, 24% burns, reported as serious.
The injured remain "hemodynamically stable, no hypovolemic shock, preserved diuresis, and afebrile. They are in the healing process."

Although the variation in absolute numbers was only two people - 25 fatalities this year compared to 23 in 2023 - the percentage represents an 8.7% increase.
The report titled Protection of Labor. Selected Indicators, published this Monday by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), detailed that between January and June of this year, 851 work-related accidents were recorded, which represents 34 incidents fewer than the 885 that occurred in the same period in 2023.
The sectors most affected by mortality were Transportation, Storage, and Communications with six fatalities; Agriculture, Livestock, Hunting, and Forestry with four deaths; and Manufacturing Industries, Supply of Electricity, Gas, and Water, and Commerce, with three fatalities each.
In May, the ONEI reported that the number of workplace accidents in 2023 had decreased compared to 2022, although the number of fatalities remained unchanged.
Last year ended with a total of 1,491 workplace accidents, representing a decrease of 10.6% compared to the previous year.
