Cuban José "Candelita" Iglesias is having a good moment at bat in Major League Baseball, and this Tuesday he extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games, solidifying himself as a valuable asset for his team, the New York Mets.
According to journalist Francys Romero on the social network Facebook, the streak is the second longest of his career, just one game away from matching his personal record of 18, achieved more than 10 years ago when he wore the uniform of the Boston Red Sox between May and June 2013.
After a period of semi-retirement, when many believed his best days were behind him, Iglesias has once again surprised the world of baseball. After signing a contract in the middle of the season, "Candelita" has shown that he still has a lot to offer, earning back a spot as an everyday player in the MLB, Romero added.
His ability to consistently connect with the ball has allowed him to stand out again in a competitive and demanding environment like Major League Baseball, in addition to emotionally helping the Mets, who went from being far from the top positions to fighting for a spot in the postseason.
Beyond the statistics, Iglesias' return represents the perseverance and love for the sport that has characterized him since his debut in 2011. At this moment, he has a batting average of .336 and an OPS of .835, with four home runs and five stolen bases.
Undoubtedly, the Cuban has shown that age is not a barrier to performance in this difficult sport, and his recent form is a clear sign that, despite the obstacles, he remains a high-caliber player.
With his current streak, expectations continue to rise: all eyes are on "Candelita" as he looks to extend his hitting streak even further and, who knows, set a new personal record.
