A fire in Old Havana caused by the explosion of a motorcycle left one Cuban dead and several damages to the house located at Picota Street 59, between Acosta and Jesús María.

The tragic incident occurred between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday, specified the independent news site Cubanet.

A collaborator from that outlet said that the deceased was a 60-year-old man, identified by neighbors as Lázaro.

Images shared on Facebook by the user Dulce Esperanza Enríquez Valledor show the charring suffered by the electric motorcycle and the significant damage to the house, suggesting that the fire was intense and spread quickly.

The incident adds to the tragic accidents that have occurred due to the explosions of these means of transportation, which are widely used by the population.

In August last year, a family consisting of six members died following the explosion of an electric motorcycle in their home in the Luyanó neighborhood of the Diez de Octubre municipality.

According to neighbors, in the house where the explosion occurred, located at number 203 on Marqués de la Torre street, there were two scooters. One of them was charging overnight and exploded shortly after seven in the morning.

Despite the neighbors trying to help rescue the inhabitants of the place, the front door was locked with a gate and padlock, making it impossible to access. "They were trapped," lamented one of those who came to assist.

The list includes other accidents of this type that have led to fires without the loss of human lives, such as a case in the Lawton neighborhood, where a workshop and part of a house were completely destroyed.

Recently, a garage of a house in the central area of the city of Matanzas caught fire for the same reason.

Cubanet reminds us that the causes of these explosions are various: from using inappropriate chargers, replacing original devices with others that do not meet certifications, to not letting the motorcycle cool down before charging it.

In the context of scarcity experienced in Cuba, it is common for homemade lithium batteries to be installed in vehicles when the original one stops working, or for adjustments to be made to increase speed and compensate for the deficiencies of public transportation.
