The devastating passage of hurricanes Milton and Helene through Florida has led to the emergence of sinkholes in several areas of the state, including one that formed in a neighborhood of the city of Lakeland, which caused a collapse and swallowed part of a house.
The sinkhole that opened in Lakeland, in Polk County, “swallowed part of the house, including part of the garage, and caused damage to the lawn,” detailed the television channel NBC 6 South Florida.
In addition to the devastation, loss of human lives, and significant material damage, the recent hurricanes that have struck Florida have generated an additional problem that concerns both residents and authorities.
The television station report noted another sinkhole that reportedly formed at the intersection of 50th Avenue N, 24th Street North, and Haines Road in the unincorporated area of St. Petersburg last Sunday.
The location, in Pinellas County, had to be closed, and the road maintenance team alerted drivers and pedestrians to seek alternative routes.
On Thursday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) warned about a giant sinkhole that opened up in a neighborhood.
"A giant sinkhole has opened at the intersection of Irish Moss Avenue and Pond Pine Drive, blocking residents. Team HCSO is urging residents to stay vigilant, as sinkholes can expand without warning," the police reported on Facebook.
In the comments of the post, neighbors from that county shared photographs of other open holes in the areas where they live.
Authorities have urged people to be vigilant regarding damage to their homes.
As it passed through Florida, Hurricane Milton left at least 16 dead, enormous flooding, and numerous destructions in homes and other buildings due to its strong winds and the tornadoes that preceded its landfall on Wednesday, October 9th.
Helene made landfall on the night of Thursday, September 26, in northwest Florida, as a Category 4 hurricane, with winds of 225 km/h (140 mph). The powerful cyclone struck six Southern states in the United States, leaving behind a trail of devastation and at least 230 dead, making it one of the deadliest cyclones of the 21st century in that country.
During a visit to Florida this Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced federal assistance to the state of over 600 million dollars due to the damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton.
