The Cuban baseball team traveled this Wednesday to South Korea as part of their journey to the Premier 12 tournament, which will be held from November 10 to 24 in Mexico, Taipei, and Japan.
In the preparation process, the team led by Armando Johnson will participate in the Korean Autumn Development League from October 18 to November 2, according to the website Swing Completo. This event will distribute cash prizes, and the champion will receive 20 million won (the equivalent of just over 14,700 U.S. dollars).
Before the departure, the Facebook page of JIT Deporte Cubano published some snapshots at José Martí International Airport in Havana.
Regarding the Premier, Cuba, whose team was presented with the flag on Tuesday morning, is in group B alongside South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Australia, Taipei, and Japan, the reigning champion.
The matches of this round will take place at the "Vantelin Dome Nagoya", a Japanese dream, and at the "Taipei Dome" and "Tianmu", both in Taipei.
For its part, in section A, Mexico, the United States, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Panama, and Puerto Rico will compete from November 10 to 14 at the "Charros Pan American Stadium of Jalisco" in Guadalajara and at "Santa Teresita de Tepic" in Nayarit, all in Mexican cities.
In this third edition, the tournament will have a similar format to the previous editions. After the first phase, the top two teams from each group will compete in the Super Round, scheduled at the Tokyo Dome.
The leaders of that stage will clash for the gold, while third and fourth will fight to make it onto the awards podium.
In the previous Premier 12, Cuba was eliminated immediately after a pathetic performance summarized in two shutouts out of three possible. They had 26 out of 28 scoreless innings, did not achieve any extra-base hits, and their batters struck out 28 times with only four walks.
The last edition of the event, held in 2019, was won by Japan. Meanwhile, four years earlier, in 2015, the first championship was taken by South Korea.
