A 60-year-old Cuban man was arrested for multiple burglaries in Miami-Dade cities, where he has an extensive criminal record.
Andrés Duquesne appeared this week before a county criminal court, facing charges for six thefts committed in Miami and Miami Beach. He is accused of burglary, petty theft, and fraudulent use of credit cards.
Mike Vega, spokesperson for the Miami Police, told América TeVe that in three of the cases, Duquesne stole wallets and took the money they contained, as well as the credit cards, which he then used for his own benefit.
In the first incident, he entered a smoke shop without authorization and took a wallet from the back. Soon after, he used the owner's credit cards, which alerted her to the situation and prompted her to call 911.
The second robbery took place in a café, where the accused managed to access an area exclusive to employees. There, he stole a wallet and $100 in cash. He then used the owner's credit cards.
Finally, he picked up a wallet from a parked vehicle, and as was his habit, he used the credit cards fraudulently.
The authorities do not rule out the possibility of more victims, which could lead to an increase in charges against the Cuban individual.
During the hearing, Judge Mindy S. Glazer raised Duquesne's bail due to the recurrence of his offenses and issued restraining orders against him from the establishments where he committed the thefts, such as restaurants, hotels, and laundries.
"These are workers who strive to get ahead every day. We are here to protect the community and ensure that these incidents do not happen again," the judge stated.
If found guilty, the Cuban could face a sentence ranging from 60 days to 15 years in prison, in addition to fines.
For his part, Officer Mike Vega provided some recommendations to prevent this type of crime, which has increased in South Florida.
Vega emphasized that valuable items, such as wallets or firearms, should not be left inside vehicles. He suggested that business owners provide locked lockers for their employees to protect their belongings.
