A Cuban man died after being shot by the owner of the apartment he was renting in Westchester, Miami-Dade County, last Thursday, during a dispute over a thermostat that escalated into a physical confrontation, according to reports from the authorities.

The victim was identified as Carlos Alberto González, 57 years old and of Cuban origin, who died from a gunshot wound to the head inflicted by his landlord, Adam Louis Anson, 37 years old.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) reported that around 8:00 AM on Thursday, January 23rd, officers responded to the 9400 block of Southwest 17th Terrace after receiving reports of a shooting.

There they found González injured by a gunshot, who was urgently transferred in critical condition to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he later died.

According to the arrest report cited by local media, on the morning of the tragic incident, Anson went to the efficiency he rented from the Cuban, located on the east side of his house, while armed with a semi-automatic pistol. He struck a window in an attempt to enter the apartment in order to adjust the air conditioning thermostat.

The authorities indicated that González opened the door, and at that moment, Anson forcibly broke in and began to hit him, with no provocation having occurred. Afterwards, he dragged his tenant to the backyard and shot him several times in the head.

After the shooting, he entered the efficiency, adjusted the thermostat, and returned home, where he later called 911. According to the account he provided to the operator, the victim had attempted to assault him, which is why he drew his weapon and shot him, in self-defense.

The police arrested Anson on Saturday for questioning, but eventually left him in custody on charges of second-degree murder and armed burglary with assault or bodily injury.

During his appearance before the court this Sunday, the judge denied him bail. Anson remains detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade.

In a by Cuban journalist Mario Vallejo, a neighbor from the house where the murder, identified as Leyani Pérez, provided details about the tragic event.

Pérez commented that González was "a hardworking man, a truck driver, who had just returned from work at 5 am" and stated that the attacker "beat him, dragged him to the edge of my fence, shot him in the head and at my house, and then dragged him outside his home, went in, and fixed the thermostat."

Sonia Martín, a close friend of the victim, also mourned his death: "Rest in peace to the wonderful person that Carlitos was, as his friends affectionately called him. May God and the law take control of what has happened. Our deepest condolences to his family and wife."
