Democratic congressman wants to initiate an impeachment process against Trump

The announcement was made by a Texas legislator during their speech in the House of Representatives.

A Democratic representative announced on Wednesday his intention to initiate the impeachment process against the President of the United States, Donald Trump, due to his statements regarding Gaza following the visit of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamín Netanyahu, to Washington.

"I am here to announce that I will be introducing articles of impeachment against the president for the desperate actions he has proposed and carried out," declared Texas representative Al Green during his address in the House of Representatives.

Trump suggested on Tuesday, after meeting with Netanyahu, that the United States take control of Gaza, lead its reconstruction, and that the Palestinians be relocated to other countries.

"Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a minor issue, especially when it comes from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world," said Al Green, who rejected those statements.

Following the legislator's announcement, Trump's campaign team responded with a signature-gathering initiative to defend the president against what they described as "radical lunatics."

"The Democrats have just called for another impeachment against me! They lost to me in a huge crushing victory, and now their only option to stop MAGA is to launch a third impeachment", Trump stated in a statement.

The American president already faced two impeachment proceedings during his first term (2017-2021).

In December 2019, the House of Representatives charged him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, making him the third president in U.S. history to face an impeachment.

In January 2021, just a week before completing his first term, he faced a second impeachment process, this time for incitement to insurrection, following the assault by his supporters on the Capitol in an attempt to block the certification of Joe Biden's victory (2021-2025).

On both occasions, the Senate acquitted him.

Are there chances of success for an impeachment against Trump right now?

International media agree that the announced step by Green would only mark the beginning of a process with little chance of success.

The impeachment articles must be voted on in the House of Representatives, where the Republicans hold the majority.

If they were approved, the impeachment would move to the Senate, also under Republican control, making any attempt to remove the president more difficult.

The White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, has stated that Trump has not committed to deploying U.S. troops in Gaza, and believes that Washington should engage in the reconstruction of the area "to ensure stability in the region."

When asked about the possibility of Trump sending troops to Gaza to forcibly expel the Palestinians, the spokesperson emphasized that the president's priority is the reconstruction of the enclave and that his plan aims to provide "all the people in the region" with stability, economic development, and opportunities.

Benjamín Netanyahu has described Trump's proposal as "extraordinary" and a "good idea," which Democrats and the UN criticize as a potential ethnic cleansing.

"It is the first good idea I have heard. It is an extraordinary idea that I believe should be pursued, examined, and carried out, because I think it could create a different future for everyone," Netanyahu said in an interview with the American network FOX.

"What’s wrong with allowing Gazans who want to leave to do so? They can go, they can come back later, but Gaza needs to be rebuilt..." added the Israeli leader.
