A Transtur bus transporting Czech tourists caught fire on Thursday morning near the viewpoint of Topes de Collantes, in the province of Sancti Spíritus, with no victims reported, official sources reported.
On the bus were 20 tourists, two drivers, and a translator, who were on an excursion to that location in the mountains of the municipality of Trinidad, indicated Yensy Turiño, director of Transtur in Sancti Spíritus, to the government newspaper Escambray.
The vehicle was completely burnt out. The tourists lost part of their luggage.
The fire was extinguished "in a matter of minutes" by specialized forces from the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), "without any injuries reported to the passengers or crew of the bus," Turiño assured.
The official revealed that, after the incident, another means of transportation was made available to tourists from the Czech Republic, allowing them to continue "with the planned excursion, which includes a several-hour stay in Topes de Collantes and the subsequent transfer to the northern keys of Villa Clara."
Turiño did not provide information on what measures will be taken regarding the luggage lost by travelers.
The authorities are investigating the causes of the fire in "a bus that appeared to be in good technical condition and was operating at half capacity," as noted by Escambray.
The news report included harrowing images of the bus, completely consumed by the flames.
The fires in vehicles on the streets and highways of Cuba raise concerns due to their frequency and danger.
Cuban authorities do not provide explanations for the causes of these types of incidents, and in the absence of an official report, the population speculates that they may be a result of the poor technical condition of the vehicle fleet in the country, both state-owned and private, or the use of low-quality fuels.
For tourists, traveling to Cuba can pose a risk due to frequent accidents on the roads, among other reasons.
The Italian tourist Patrizia Crisolini Malatesta lost her life last January in a tragic traffic accident that occurred on the National Highway, near the municipality of Aguada de Pasajeros, in the province of Cienfuegos, when the minibus she was traveling in, also operated by Transtur, crashed into the road divider. In addition to her, a Cuban tour guide also lost her life, while seven other people were injured.
