Rats roam freely in a hospital in Pinar del Río

"If they're like this during the day, just imagine how they are at night; we need to call the piper," mocked a netizen.

As is the case in many Cuban hospitals, at the León Cuervo Rubio Clinical-Surgical Hospital in Pinar del Río, rats roam freely without anyone taking care of eliminating them.

A video shared by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada on Facebook shows numerous rodents running in what appears to be an interior courtyard of the facility, very close to the windows of the rooms or other locations.

The recording was taken during the day, which suggests that there must be many more rats, as they are nocturnal animals.

"Where are the Hygiene and Epidemiology officials?" questioned a young woman in the comments section of the post.

"Canel and his cliques," affirmed a Santiago resident.

"With how dangerous those pests are, they roam around like Pedro in his own home. No poison, no traps, no stray cats; gentlemen, we need something to stop this plague, please..." a woman pleaded.

"If they're like that during the day, just imagine them at night; we need to call the piper," mocked an autonomous worker.

Complaints frequently surface online regarding the presence of rats, cockroaches, flies, and bedbugs in Cuban hospitals, further highlighting the crisis in the public health system.

Less than a month ago, a patient's family recorded a video in the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, where bedbugs and cockroaches roam freely.

"Above the patients' beds," said the woman.

"Here, with my German friends. (...) They are having a meeting today," she said in another part of the recording.

In May 2023, a pregnant woman who was admitted to give birth at the Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas General Hospital, also in Santiago, reported the poor conditions of the facility.

"This place is more of a dump than a hospital, the cockroaches want to take you away, the bathrooms are disgraceful, and the treatment from the laboratory staff is terrible. And why continue? In the end, no matter where you complain, this is going to keep happening and it will get worse," lamented Yendis Martínez Aroche, who was only thinking about getting home as quickly as possible.
