Eight people remain hospitalized, two of them in critical condition, following injuries sustained in the fatal accident that occurred on January 20 on the Morón-Isla Turiguanó road in the province of Ciego de Ávila, which resulted in the death of seven individuals.

Authorities from the Doctor Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial General Teaching Hospital, located in the provincial capital, and from the Captain Roberto Rodríguez Provincial General Teaching Hospital in the municipality of Morón, informed the official newspaper Invasor that, out of the 59 injured individuals sent to both health centers, most have been discharged and only eight remain hospitalized.

In the Morón hospital, six patients are hospitalized, including two women in critical condition, who are receiving care in the intensive care unit: Dannerys Acosta López (23 years old) and Zulema Rodríguez González (30), residents of that municipality.

In addition, three patients are reported as being in critical condition in the neurosurgery ward: Laurent Menéndez Vázquez (42 years old) from Ciego de Ávila; Luis E. López Infante (31) from Ciro Redondo; and Ania Rodríguez Cuelly (50) from Morón. Meanwhile, Yasiel Mayea Mainet (27) from Ciro Redondo is in the orthopedic ward and is expected to be discharged in the coming hours.

Meanwhile, at the provincial capital hospital, Aniuska Planché Speck, 38 years old and a resident of Ciro Redondo, remains admitted to the orthopedics ward, reported to be in serious condition due to a closed chest trauma; and Madelayne Arnabos Martínez, 37 years old and a resident of Turiguanó Island, is reported to be in serious condition due to a right proximal humerus fracture, as reported by Dr. Livania Lozano Lezcano.

The information from Invasor assures that the health institutions “have all the resources to provide care to the patients,” as confirmed by the director of the Morón hospital, Dr. Julio Díaz Agramonte.

The note also states that "workers from the paladar El Mango, the Café Literario project, and the micro, small, and medium enterprise El Trópico are responding to the nutritional needs of patients, family members, and medical and paramedical staff from both hospitals."

In the early hours of January 20, two buses transporting workers from the Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo collided on the road connecting Morón with the Island of Turiguanó, under poor visibility conditions due to the fog in the area.

Initially, six people lost their lives in the accident, including the bus drivers, and another 59 suffered injuries. The following day, the death toll increased to seven due to the passing of a worker from the Playa Coco hotel.

The deceased in the accident were drivers Yuniester Oliva Artiles (Ciego de Ávila) and Yohelvis Reino Veitía (Ciego de Ávila); and the tourism sector workers: Ezequiel Díaz Matos (Baraguá), Daniel Trujillo Rodríguez (Morón), Yaensy Conde Vega (Ciro Redondo), Javier Hernández Zamora (Ciro Redondo), and Michel Rodríguez Hernández.

From the very beginning, Cuban authorities pointed to human error as the cause of the mass accident, while an official commission conducted the investigation into the tragic incident.

Finally, in its official report on the investigation, the Police attributed the responsibility for the accident to the driver of the Yutong bus, which was coming from the main municipality.

The captain Norge Pérez Fraga, deputy chief of Police Instruction in the province, said that “the driver of the offending vehicle, who was traveling from south to north, obstructed the path of the Transmetro vehicle, which was moving in the opposite direction, amidst a thick fog that hindered visibility”.
