A Cuban with multiple criminal records, including sexual assault, was arrested during operations conducted in El Paso, Texas, by various law enforcement and national security agencies of the United States, reported a statement published by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in El Paso, in partnership with the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), the FBI, the ATF, the DEA, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, have apprehended several "criminal aliens" during targeted enforcement operations in the west Texas region, which began in the week of January 20, the date when President Donald Trump was inaugurated for his second term.
The authorities did not disclose the name of the Cuban, 56 years old and with a criminal record that includes sexual assault, battery causing bodily harm, evasion of arrest, and driving under the influence.
The individual is being held pending deportation, the statement clarified.
The National Security Investigations Department emphasized that such actions are "essential to keep the community safe from criminals".
"Our collaboration with partners responsible for enforcing the law at the federal, state, and local levels is crucial for dismantling criminal organizations and protecting the welfare of our citizens," stated Special Agent in Charge of HSI El Paso, Jason T. Stevens.
In recent weeks, several cases of Cuban migrants arrested during raids carried out by authorities have come to light, who will be deported in line with the new immigration policy implemented by President Trump upon his return to the White House. This policy focuses on curbing illegal immigration and protecting the country's borders and its citizens.
Starting January 20, the ICE and other immigration agencies, along with law enforcement, intensified operations to apprehend undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
The ICE detention centers have exceeded their capacity, reaching 109% occupancy, as reported by U.S. media outlets. Currently, the agency is holding approximately 42,000 migrants, despite its official capacity of 38,521 beds in private prisons and county jails.
At the same time, the deportation flights for illegal foreigners to their countries of origin and to the Naval Base of Guantánamo, in Cuba, which is equipped to receive up to 30,000 migrants have been systematized.
The week that has just ended, high-risk criminals were transferred to the base, all members of the dangerous Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, who have committed homicides, armed robberies, and trafficking in weapons and drugs, among other offenses, according to U.S. authorities.
During his recent tour of Central America, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached agreements with the presidents of El Salvador and Guatemala for the transfer of undocumented immigrants to those countries, until they are permanently deported to their countries of origin.
Trump's immigration strategy has generated controversy within the country, criticisms from human rights organizations, and has caused increasing uncertainty among undocumented immigrants who fear being detained and deported.
The White House defends its actions as the only way to strengthen control and stop illegal immigration into its territory, through the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.
According to data from ICE, cited by Fox News, there are more than 1.4 million foreign nationals with final deportation orders in the U.S., while over 7 million immigrants are listed in the “not detained” record.
