The provincial government of Las Tunas updated on Saturday the status of those injured in a serious traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of the morning on the Central Highway, when two passenger buses collided.

The incident occurred at Km 688, in the town of La Estrella, when a bus from the company Transmetro Yutong, from the province of Havana, collided with another rented Diana bus from the province of Granma.

The incident resulted in 13 people injured, of which 12 reported serious injuries and one remains in critical condition.

Although most sustained bruises that are not life-threatening, a passenger identified as Jose Luis Victoria Peña, 57 years old and a resident of Havana, is in serious condition and has a splenic hematoma, acute surgical abdomen, and a ruptured left kidney.

The report states that the man requires a splenectomy and a nephrectomy.

Jose Luis Victoria Peña (57 years old, Havana): Hematoma esplénico, abdomen agudo quirúrgico, y estallamiento del riñón izquierdo. Requiere esplenectomía y nefrectomía, en estado grave.

Rusbeida Hernández Cruz (3 years old, Camagüey): Critical condition.

Madelin Jerez Portales (40 years old, Ciego de Ávila): Multiple contusions.

The hospital director, Dr. Marianela Zapata Romero, reported that the institution has the necessary staff and medical supplies to provide adequate care for those affected.

For their part, the authorities are investigating the causes that led to this accident.

In January, the Cuban government held drivers responsible as the main cause of traffic accidents in 2024, according to a report from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).
