Torrential rains batter western Cuba this Monday, causing flooding in several areas, including regions in the provinces of Havana and Pinar del Río, according to preliminary reports.
The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) announced at noon on this Monday that areas with moderate to heavy storms and rainfall were approaching the northern part of the western region.
"Current images from the radar at La Bajada in Pinar del Río capture a line of prefrontal storms with moderate to strong rainfall activity that will be moving across the west in the coming hours," warned the meteorological report. Furthermore, it added that in areas where thunderstorms occur, wind intensity may increase.

The meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez explained on his social media that a prefrontal trough is extending over the western region, causing showers, rain, and some thunderstorms.
"Strong activity centers have been identified in Pinar del Río, Artemisa, and Havana. We have been informed that intense rainfall is being recorded in the capital, and there are already flooded areas, he noted."
Photos and videos shared on social media show flooding in Vedado, Marianao, Boyeros, Centro Habana, and El Cerro in Havana, as well as in the municipality of Los Palacios and the city of Pinar del Río in the province of the same name.
Insmet specified that the images from the meteorological satellite show abundant layered clouds over the southeastern waters of the Gulf of Mexico, associated with a new cold front and a prefrontal trough preceding it.
Both systems will move to the east and southeast and reach the western part of Cuba during the afternoon and evening of this Monday, increasing areas of cloudiness, rain, and thunderstorms, according to the weather forecast.
The Civil Defense issued a Early Warning Alert due to the proximity of a cold front to the country, which will bring heavy rains and thunderstorms to the western and central regions over the next 24 to 48 hours.
The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) confirmed that the weather change will begin affecting the area from this Monday afternoon and will continue until early Tuesday morning.
