Sandro Castro's extravagant greeting for International Women's Day

His history of ostentatious posts in the context of the Cuban crisis reinforces the criticisms.

Sandro Castro, grandson of the late dictator Fidel Castro, has sparked controversy on social media again after posting a peculiar message on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Through Instagram, Castro shared a video message, where not only the staging has sparked discussion but also the words used to refer to women.

In the video, Castro appears dressed in black, reclining on a white sheet and surrounded by three women dressed in black with red lips.

The group adopts a symmetrical formation, with Sandro Castro in the center showing a smile with traces of fake blood on his lips and what appears to be a women's thong around his neck, while the three women surround him, evoking an aesthetic inspired by vampirism and seduction.

At the end of the clip, two of them, wearing dark glasses, pretend to bite her neck, leaving marks of what appears to be artificial blood on her face, while the third one, a blonde woman with her eyes blindfolded, lies next to her with a neutral expression.

“I am under the light of the moon with three mutants who fell from Earth, who are giving me connectivity today especially, internationally, to send my congratulations to women,” Castro said in the video.

The son of Alex Castro Soto del Valle, the official photographer of his father Fidel Castro, continued to make derogatory remarks about women. “Those damned little animals, tarantulas, snakes, owls, squirrels, happy and sadistic toxic beings”, and then delivered his eccentric congratulations.

Reactions to the publication came swiftly, due to its insensitivity and disconnection from the significance of March 8, a date that commemorates the fight for women's rights.

The staging was described as "frivolous" and "out of context," arguing that, instead of reflecting solidarity with women's causes, it reinforces an image of ostentation and trivialization of a day of social advocacy.

This is not the first time Sandro Castro has stirred controversy with his posts. In the past, he has faced criticism for boasting about his luxurious lifestyle in a country where the majority of the population struggles with economic difficulties.

In December 2024, Sandro Castro organized an extravagant birthday party at the EFE bar in Havana, amidst an energy crisis that affected the country with prolonged blackouts. The celebration included exclusive drinks and a dress code, which sparked criticism for his insensitivity towards the situation faced by the Cuban population.

On December 31 of that same year, he shared a video in which, in a festive tone, he urged his followers to "drink as if there were no tomorrow".

This message was perceived as a mockery towards Cubans who were facing economic difficulties and shortages of basic resources.

While on February 14, he posted a video in which, wearing heart-shaped glasses and holding roses, he raised his middle finger with his right hand, a gesture interpreted as a provocation towards his critics.

Additionally, he mentioned consuming drinks that are inaccessible to most, which intensified criticism of his disconnection from the reality of the country.
