A Cuban resident in the province of Las Tunas is currently hospitalized in critical condition due to dengue, as recently confirmed by the national director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba, Francisco Durán.
The specialist, in an interview for the prime-time broadcast of the Cuban National News, acknowledged that, although there have been no fatalities from that disease, one person is in critical condition.
Additionally, it was reported that there are more than 2,400 people hospitalized, primarily due to dengue, due to "the severity that this disease can have."
Regarding the epidemiological situation in the country, Durán emphasized that dengue transmission is ongoing in three provinces, four municipalities, and four health areas. The Oropouche virus is also circulating in Cuba across seven provinces and ten municipalities.
In light of this situation, the expert urged not to be complacent and to go to the doctor at any sign indicative of an illness.
In the country, there are also cases of influenza that, according to Durán, have predominantly occurred in young children, two years old or younger, which is why he urged parents to take their little ones to get vaccinated.
At the end of January, authorities reported a decrease in cases of dengue and Oropouche, although they acknowledged that certain risks remained due to climatic conditions.
On that occasion, reports indicated that the number of provinces affected by dengue had decreased significantly, being recorded in only three provinces, four municipalities, and four health areas where active transmission was still occurring.
In December, there were transmissions in 13 provinces, with a high number of patients admitted and six cases reported as severe, located in two provinces.
In 2024, Cuba faced various epidemiological challenges, particularly highlighting the increase in cases of Hepatitis A and the spread of vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and the Oropouche virus.
Frequently asked questions about the epidemiological situation in Cuba
What is the current situation of dengue in Cuba?
In Cuba, more than 2,400 people are hospitalized primarily due to dengue, and the country is facing active transmission in three provinces, four municipalities, and four health areas. Although no fatalities have been reported, one patient is in critical condition.
What precautions should Cubans take against outbreaks of dengue and Oropouche?
It is important for Cubans to keep their environment clean, eliminate mosquito breeding sites, and use mosquito nets and repellents. They should also seek medical attention for any symptoms to ensure an accurate diagnosis and avoid complications.
How is poor garbage collection affecting the health crisis in Cuba?
Poor waste collection in Cuba exacerbates the health crisis by facilitating the proliferation of mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as dengue and Oropouche. Unsanitary conditions in cities increase the risk of epidemics.
What measures are Cuban authorities taking to control dengue and Oropouche?
The Cuban authorities have implemented measures such as improving garbage collection and promoting the elimination of mosquito breeding sites. However, the lack of resources and fuel remains a significant obstacle to carrying out effective fumigation campaigns.
