More than 2,700 Cubans hospitalized due to dengue, one in critical condition

There is also the presence of respiratory issues typical of the winter season, which primarily affect children, young people, and the elderly.

Doctor Francisco Durán García, national director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health, reported this Wednesday that more than 2,700 people remain hospitalized in Cuba due to dengue, although only one patient is in the intensive care unit.

During his usual presence in the television segments of the state-run media, the specialist pointed out that the transmission of dengue and the Oropouche virus continues in several provinces, although at lower levels than in previous stages.

In addition, he mentioned the presence of respiratory conditions typical of the winter season, which mainly affect children, young people, and older adults.

Since January, Durán himself stated that the epidemiological outlook showed improvements regarding the spread of arboviral diseases, especially Dengue and Oropouche.

The year 2024 came to an end for Cuba amidst an epidemiological landscape marked by the same arboviruses (diseases transmitted by mosquitoes) that affected the country throughout the year: dengue and Oropouche.

In December, there was transmission in 13 provinces, with a considerable number of patients hospitalized and six cases reported as severe, located in two provinces.

In recent months, the island has faced various epidemiological challenges, notably the increase in Hepatitis A cases and the aforementioned vector-borne diseases. Despite the decrease in cases, dengue and Oropouche continue to pose a threat in Cuba.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dengue and Oropouche in Cuba

What is the current situation of dengue in Cuba?

More than 2,700 people are hospitalized for dengue in Cuba, with one patient in serious condition in intensive care. Dengue transmission remains active in several provinces, although at lower levels than in previous stages.

How does the Oropouche virus affect the Cuban population?

The Oropouche virus remains a concern in Cuba, affecting several provinces. Although its symptoms are milder than those of dengue, it still poses a health risk. The transmission of the Oropouche virus continues in 15 provinces, with most cases being managed at home.

What challenges does Cuba face in controlling dengue and Oropouche?

Cuba is facing a lack of resources for vector control, such as fumigation, due to fuel and resource shortages. This issue is exacerbated by poor waste collection and inadequate sanitation, which facilitate the proliferation of transmitting mosquitoes.

What preventive measures can Cubans take against dengue and Oropouche?

The Cuban population can contribute to prevention by maintaining a clean environment, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, and using mosquito nets and repellents. It is vital to seek medical attention at the first sign of any symptoms for an accurate diagnosis, as dengue can worsen rapidly.
