In a new move toward the dollarization of the Cuban economy, the Cimex Branch in Ciego de Ávila announced the opening of a store that will operate exclusively in US dollars (USD).

The inauguration is scheduled for this Friday and will take place gradually, according to Aimé María García León, the commercial manager of the entity.

The establishment, called Nuevo Boulevard, is located at Independencia Street, corner of Maceo, in the city of Ciego de Ávila, mentioned the local official newspaper Invasor.

The newspaper highlights that the new store will offer a variety of products, including fresh and dry foods, beverages, and personal care and hygiene items.

The management also assured that "the new location will not affect the availability of products in other establishments" that continue to operate with Free Convertible Currency (MLC).

This opening adds to a series of establishments that have been authorized in the country for transactions exclusively in dollars, which has sparked strong criticism among Cubans who do not have access to that currency.

Recently, a similar store was opened in Havana and another one in Holguín, without prior advertising due to the discomfort that such measures generate among the population.

The Cuban government justifies the expansion of stores in USD as a means to attract foreign currency and improve the supply of products.

However, the exclusion of those who only handle Cuban pesos has deepened economic inequality and social discontent on the island.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Opening of Dollar Stores in Cuba

Why is the Cuban government opening stores that only accept dollars?

The Cuban government justifies the opening of stores that operate exclusively in dollars as a means to attract foreign currency and improve the supply of products. However, the measure has generated criticism for exacerbating inequality, as many Cubans do not have access to dollars.

How does the opening of dollar stores affect the Cuban population?

The opening of dollar stores primarily affects those who only earn in Cuban pesos, deepening economic inequality and social discontent. These establishments, well-stocked with national and foreign products, are inaccessible to a large part of the population that does not have foreign currency.

What products can be found in the new dollar stores?

The dollar stores offer a wide variety of products, including fresh and dry food, beverages, hygiene items, perfume, and household products. These establishments are usually well-stocked, in contrast to the stores that operate in freely convertible currency (MLC) or Cuban pesos, which face shortages.

What are the accepted payment methods in these stores?

The stores that operate in dollars accept cash payments in US dollars and through international bank cards such as VISA and MasterCard. Some stores also accept local cards, such as Clásica and AIS, which offer bonuses on purchases.

What has been the reaction of Cubans to the expansion of stores selling in dollars?

The reaction of Cubans has been predominantly negative, with significant outrage and criticism directed at the government. Many citizens believe that this measure is a mockery and a disrespect towards those who do not have access to dollars, exacerbating the economic and social tensions on the island.
