Cuban actress Mirta Ibarra, one of the most iconic figures in the island's cinema, was awarded the National Film Prize 2025 in recognition of her outstanding career and her impact on national culture.
The news was announced this Thursday by state media, following a decision by a jury from the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC).
The ruling states that "by a majority vote, the jury selected, for her legacy, continuity, integrity, and her long career in Cuban cinematography, not only as an actress in emblematic films from 1967 to the present, but also for her numerous contributions over more than fifty years in cinema and national culture."
The document highlights "the impact of her work on Cuban society, her efforts in preserving the legacy of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Titón), all of which make her one of the most prominent and recognized figures, not only in our country but also on the international stage."
"I didn't expect it; I feel very happy and excited," the actress, screenwriter, and documentary filmmaker expressed in statements to state television. "It has been a difficult stretch," she added.
Ibarra, who turned 79 on February 28, made his film debut with a role in The Last Supper (1976) directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea.
However, her great opportunity came in 1983 with To a Certain Extent, where her performance earned her the Coral Award for Best Female Performance at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana.
With a filmography surpassing twenty titles, the actress has made her mark in productions such as Se permuta, Otra mujer, Adorables mentiras, Guantanamera, and Siete días en La Habana.
However, her most iconic role is that of Nancy in Strawberry and Chocolate (1993), a film that marked a milestone in Cuban cinema and earned her international recognition.
Graduated from the National School of Art of Cuba and holding a degree in Latin American Literature from the University of Havana, Ibarra began her career in theater in the 1960s, being part of groups such as Teatro Estudio and Bertolt Brecht.
Despite her extensive career, Mirta Ibarra remains active in film.
In her latest project, Anonymous Neurotic, she plays a woman who dreams of succeeding on the big screen while confronting misogynistic violence.
The movie, for which he is also the screenwriter, will be released this year.
The 2025 National Film Award not only recognizes the career of an exceptional actress but also her contribution to the memory and development of Cuban cinema.
