The case adds to a series of recent murders in Santiago de Cuba, contributing to the atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the area.

A tragic incident has shocked the community of Santiago de Cuba following the brutal murder of Artemio Luna Nápoles, a 69-year-old man, in his home located in the town of Belleza, in Songo – La Maya, allegedly to steal his checkbook and a Panda brand television.

According to eyewitness reports, the authorities did not arrive at the crime scene until approximately 3:00 PM. Neighbors and close acquaintances claim that Luna Nápoles lived alone, which the attackers may have exploited to carry out the crime without opposition.

They ransacked his house, apparently looking for the check he had cashed the previous day. Everything seems to indicate that they called him, he went out, and they killed him. declared CubaNet Dianelis Mina, a neighbor of the deceased.

Other testimonies indicate that the attackers used stones to strike him on the head until they took his life. They then supposedly took the television, the only entertainment device that the victim owned.

This crime is not an isolated incident in the area. Another resident stated that there have been at least three similar violent events in that community, which has created an atmosphere of fear and widespread insecurity among the residents. He noted that people are afraid to go out at night or leave their homes unattended.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition of the body, which remained under the sun for about ten hours, the burial of Luna Nápoles, scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, was moved up by the family.

The province of Santiago de Cuba has experienced a worrying increase in violent and criminal incidents in recent months, reflecting a decline in public safety.

On March 25, after nearly two months of disappearance, the body of Agustín Rodríguez Domínguez, known as "Cachito", was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

The discovery took place in a wooded area called Tanque Rojo, in the Chicharrones neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba.

Neighbors suggest that his death could be related to a previous conflict over horse or donkey meat, and although some suspects were arrested, they were released on bail.

Also, in December 2024, Luis Mario Castillo, the custodian of a cooperative of the Ministry of Sugar in El Cristo, Santiago de Cuba, was murdered while working. The motive for the crime was the theft of some oxen. The perpetrators of the crime were arrested and confessed to the act.

Additionally, a month earlier, authorities arrested Alex Recasen Suárez, accused of being the perpetrator of two murders of security guards that shocked the residents of Santiago de Cuba. The victims were employees responsible for security at various establishments.

In October, Tamara Carreras Martínez, 57 years old and a worker in the Informatization Department at the University of Oriente, was murdered by her partner in the streets of the provincial capital of Santiago. This femicide caused great concern within the university community and the population in general.

Similarly, other concerning incidents have been reported, such as the discovery of bodies in streets and wooded areas, and the murder of young people under circumstances still being investigated.

These events have heightened the perception of insecurity among the people of Santiago.
