A young man from Santiago de Cuba, barely 23 years old and resident in the rural community of El Majagual, in the Segundo Frente municipality, was allegedly murdered to steal his motorcycle, as revealed on social networks by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

The deceased has been identified as David Montero Mejías and the crime occurred on the afternoon of this Wednesday.

“I don't have the exact details, only that he went on a trip and they took his motorcycle, cut his throat and left him lying off the road.”, a friend told the aforementioned source.

“When they found him he was still fighting for his life, but before reaching the hospital he bled,” he added.

In the comments section of the publication, several people close to the victim confirmed his death.

“It died in the father's hands. What is this, gentlemen? They took his backpack, shoes and motorcycle. He is my neighbor, how long, my God?”, a young woman identified as Thalía Montoya questioned in the comments.

Dozens of commentators reacted with astonishment to the news of a new crime in Santiago de Cuba, something that some attribute to the increase in drugs.

“There are drugs everywhere. You don't have to be addicted to it to see them. The authorities are only serious about the opposition, those who ask for a change in the system and demand freedom,” noted one commentator.

Several people close to the deceased young man were shocked and saddened by his death.

“My brother, God bless you. My soul is destroyed by your departure, I will always remember you with great gratitude and affection, thank you for all the moments we shared. EPD, my bro,” wrote a young man.

“What a heinous crime! So much violence is outrageous! “May God welcome you into his kingdom, David, and give your family enough strength to face your loss… you were very good for this world,” added another.

Until the closing of this note, no other details have emerged about the circumstances in which David Montero Mejías died.

The growing violence in Santiago de Cuba has even been admitted by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) as a problem that requires special attention.

At the end of January, a senior official from the Ministry of the Interior in that province recognized, during a meeting with residents of the Abel Santamaría district (El Salao), the presence of criminal gangs dedicated to "implementing terror" among the residents.

On that occasion, the authorities asked for a vote of confidence from those affected and sent a message to the criminals, warning them to know that they will be rigorously punished for the acts they have committed.

He specifically referred to the case of young David Enrique Perdomo Álvarez, a 26-year-old young lineman, who one of those gangs cut off his right hand, incident for which there are already five detainees, according to the MININT official.
