A Cuban undocumented immigrant with a history of drug trafficking was arrested in Miami

The Cuban served his sentence, but he will still be deported.

Jeffrey Dinise, Chief of the Miami Sector of the Border Patrol, reported the arrest this week of a undocumented Cuban who has a history of trafficking methamphetamine 11 years ago, a crime for which he served time in prison.

In a post on X where she did not mention the name of the arrested individual, Dinise did specify that the individual was convicted of methamphetamine distribution in 2014.

The information detailed that the individual served more than six and a half years in prison for that crime, exactly 80 months of incarceration.

In the final segment of the report, the border authority concluded that the Cuban will be deported.

In recent weeks, several Cubans with criminal records have been arrested by the authorities in Florida.

In March, the cases of Manuel Ismael Pérez and Osiel Rodríguez-González became widely known.

Manuel Ismael Pérez is a registered sex offender who illegally entered southern Florida from Cuba several decades ago and was arrested in an operation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Key West. His record includes sexual offenses against a minor, aggravated assault, and drug trafficking.

The other confirmed Cuban among those arrested is Osiel Rodríguez-González, who is in the United States illegally, has a criminal record for domestic violence and cocaine trafficking, and was found guilty of beating and suffocating a dog.

Deportation of Cubans since Trump assumed the presidency

Since Donald Trump took office on January 20, there have been reports of only two deportation flights of Cubans: one with 104 deportees on February 27 and another with 60 migrants returned to the island on March 27.

However, the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) referred to a third flight - which would actually be the first - took place on January 23 and that was not reported in official media.

In early March, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, denied that the Trump administration had addressed the migration issue with the island’s government up to that point or a possible increase in the volume of deportations of citizens from the island.

"There has been no request of that nature from the U.S. government. We have not yet sat down to discuss whether that would be possible," said the high-ranking official in statements reported by the agency Reuters.

Migratory negotiations between both countries have seen progress and setbacks in recent years. The last bilateral meeting between Cuba and the U.S. on the migration issue took place in December 2024, prior to the start of President Donald Trump's second term.

Currently, the situation is puzzling: The measures adopted by Trump since he took office have rendered about 550,000 Cubans deportable.
