Identities of the deceased and injured in an accident in Ciego de Ávila revealed

The victims of the serious traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Chambas, province of Ciego de Ávila, were identified on social media by local journalists.

The accident took place on the road to Punta Alegre, in an area known as Las Vegas, near the El Asiento community.

According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred when a “guaripola” (a motorized tricycle used for passenger transport) collided with a B-8 model truck that was traveling in the opposite direction, in an area with poor visibility due to the smoke from a sugarcane field burning.

The fatal victims were identified in a post by local journalist Leonel Iparraguirre González as Nivaldo Manuel Buchillón Jiménez, 72 years old, who died at the scene of the accident; and Eglys Castillo Rodríguez, 45 years old, who passed away while being transported to the hospital due to severe polytrauma.

Both were residents of the coastal town of Punta Alegre, a place that is deeply shaken by the tragedy today.

Additionally, at least five people were reported injured, including two in critical condition:

Elier Varela Torres, 31 years old – Burns and skull fracture, in serious condition.
Eusebio Rey Boloy, 32 years old – Polytraumatized.
José Pérez Cardozo, 59 years old – Minor injuries.
Carlos Álvarez González, 58 years old – Minor injuries.
Truck driver, name not disclosed – Urgently hospitalized, reported in critical condition.

All the injured were initially treated at the Julio Castillo Polyclinic in Chambas and then transferred to the hospitals in Morón and Ciego de Ávila for specialized care.

Social media was flooded with messages of condolence and solidarity for the affected families. Neighbors, friends, and acquaintances have shared photos and memories in tribute to the deceased, "Eglys" and "Nivaldo," beloved figures in their community.

Although the causes of the accident have yet to be clarified by the authorities, unofficial reports suggest that the truck driver may have been responsible for the crash.
