A criminal network that resold stolen goods from Walmart and other stores in South Florida has been dismantled

The operation concluded with the arrest of the owner of a pawn shop and several of his employees.

A comprehensive investigation led by the Broward County Sheriff's Office (BSO) uncovered an organized crime network that operated for years from South Florida, causing millions in losses to major retail chains such as CVS, Walgreens, Home Depot, Publix, and Walmart.

The operation culminated with the arrest of the owner of a pawn shop and seven of his employees, involved in the buying and resale of stolen goods.

The criminal network was centered around the store U.S. Pawn, located in Broward County, which served as a collection and distribution point for stolen goods, according to local media reports.

The leader of the operation, Igor Melomed, 46 years old, "coordinated and organized the criminal activity and involved low-level employees," according to authorities.

The investigation began in 2022 and culminated in multiple raids and arrests.

The modus operandi of the network

The individuals involved systematically stole high-value items that were easy to resell, such as over-the-counter medications, health and beauty products, tools, and electronic devices.

Then, they delivered these products to U.S. Pawn, where they were resold both in physical stores and through online platforms.

“During the investigation, detectives determined that there was a group dedicated to stealing these goods from stores… and then reselling them at the U.S. Pawn shop, as well as on online platforms,” explained Claudinne Caro, spokesperson for the sheriff.

According to Sergeant Rich Rossman of the BSO, “it was a quite complex operation, and unfortunately very lucrative.”

The detectives uncovered a troubling trend among the affected merchants: “Everyone was going to U.S. Pawn,” Rossman added.

The criminal activity was so prolific that some thieves conducted multiple transactions daily.

The scenes described during the raids reveal the level of operation.

“They closed the door because they could not accept more customers due to the large number of products on the counters. They brought them in garbage bags and loaded them onto carts,” Rossman recounted.

The seizures and arrests

In December 2023, investigators executed search warrants at several locations of U.S. Pawn in Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale.

As a result, more than 50 pallets of stolen goods were seized, with an estimated value exceeding $750,000.

"In December 2022, our investigators executed a search warrant at one of the branches in Hollywood, where they found 53 boxes of merchandise valued at $750,000," confirmed Claudinne Caro.

In total, seven people were arrested last Tuesday, while two additional employees had already been detained earlier. The charges they face include organized crime and trafficking in stolen goods.

Impact and continuation of the case

The operation of this network not only resulted in significant economic losses for the affected stores but also highlighted the sophistication of this type of crime in the retail sector.

“They were very successful in their network of defrauding these stores,” the police spokesperson indicated.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities do not rule out further arrests or the expansion of charges to other individuals involved. This incident reflects a growing pattern of organized crime using seemingly legitimate businesses as fronts for illegal activities.
