A fire reported in brush areas near the Industrial Zone of Matanzas was successfully brought under control on Friday night, according to the state media TV Yumurí.
Members of the Matanzas Fire Department, supported by the Supertankers Command and Fire Command 2, managed to extinguish the flames in approximately 45 minutes.
No loss of human life or material damage was reported in the nearby facilities, confirmed Lieutenant Colonel Yosvany Chirino Seijas, head of the Fire Department of the city.
He explained that the fire was caused by the high temperatures and the severe drought currently affecting the country.
"Thanks to the swift intervention of our specialized forces, any impact on the economic objectives of the Industrial Zone was avoided," stated Chirino Seijas.
Authorities have urged the population to take extra preventive measures in at-risk areas, due to adverse weather conditions that increase the likelihood of wildfires and brush fires, the report states.
It clarifies that the incident is not related to the sensitive industrial facilities in the industrial zone, such as refineries or fuel depots, and did not pose a direct threat to the critical infrastructure of Matanzas at any point. In 2022, a powerful fire destroyed part of the area and claimed the lives of 17 people, many of whom were minors serving in the Mandatory Military Service.
