The Cuban freedom activist and president of the Movement for Actions for Democracy, Lázaro Mireles, was the victim of a violent assault in Madrid, where he resides and works in the hospitality sector.
According to Mireles himself, in a video shared on his social media, he was attacked on Tuesday night by a group of eight people, who approached him shouting "son of a bitch" and began to beat him brutally.
The activist explained that he received punches to the face, one of which caused him to bleed and resulted in a wound that required four stitches in his lip, as well as blows with sticks to his back and a hard kick that caused facial swelling.
He also suffered an ocular hemorrhage, although he was attended to immediately in the emergency room, and according to ophthalmology specialists, there is no internal damage to the eye.
"I was beaten with sticks on my back, I threw myself down to protect my head. They didn't take anything, not my phone, not my wallet, not my chains. This was not a common assault," Mireles reported in his testimony.
The activist believes that the attack was an act of intimidation with political motivations, as none of his belongings were taken despite being visible and within the reach of the assailants.
"If it had been a normal robbery, they would have taken my things. But this was different. This was a message," he stated.
Mireles reiterated that he will continue to denounce the Cuban regime, stating that actions like this will not silence his voice or hinder his activism. "My first denunciation will always be against the dictatorship. At the slightest provocation, always against them. Because the smallest among us is a thorn that pierces them deeply," he expressed.
The Actions for Democracy Movement has condemned the attack, and various users on social media have expressed their solidarity with the activist, demanding a thorough investigation of the events by the Spanish authorities.
