Cuban actor Alejandro Palomino pleads for his wife's health: "She is in a very delicate situation."

The health crisis in Cuba complicates access to treatments, reflecting failures in the healthcare system.

The renowned Cuban actor and director Alejandro Palomino has made an emotional plea through his Facebook account, requesting support and prayers for his wife, the fellow actress Nora Elena Rodríguez Cruz, who is facing a serious health condition.

“We are neither as fragile nor as strong as we seem,” the artist expressed. “When a patient cries out, begs, implores for their life, their case requires immediate hospital admission, study, and surgical treatment, depending on the characteristics of their severe ailment.”

Palomino also reported on the limitations faced by Cuban doctors in fulfilling their duties, alluding to the precarious reality of the healthcare system, but expressed gratitude for the dedication of the medical staff at the Cardiovascular Hospital of Havana, where Nora Elena has been admitted for the second time.

“I am deeply grateful for the generosity and efforts made to realize this admission and subsequent surgery by several doctors from that important Institute. Especially to Dr. Jorge Enrique Aguiar Pérez and Dra. Damaris, the Director of that hospital center,” he emphasized.

The surgery does not have a confirmed date yet, but the actor is hopeful that medical efforts can pave the way for his wife to receive the urgent care she needs.

The situation faced by Palomino's wife is set against a backdrop of a profound healthcare crisis affecting the entire country. According to official data, more than 70% of essential medications are in short supply, which equates to over 460 medications in the basic list. This shortage has forced many patients to turn to the informal market or rely on foreign donations to obtain basic treatments.

Cuban hospitals also face an alarming shortage of medical supplies. In some facilities, patients are required to bring their own syringes and aerosol nozzles due to the lack of these materials. In extreme cases, buttons have been used as substitutes for medical supplies in surgical procedures.

Moreover, the public health system has experienced a significant loss of personnel. Over 12,000 doctors left the system in 2022, reducing the total number of physicians and affecting the doctor-patient relationship. This situation has generated countless complaints from citizens, who suffer from the lack of specialists and face long lines to receive appropriate treatment.

The crisis has also affected pharmacies, where the shortage of medications has reached critical levels. Many Cubans are forced to stand in long lines or even sleep outside pharmacies to try to obtain the medicines they need.

In this context, Alejandro Palomino's plea not only reflects his family's personal situation but also highlights the serious shortcomings of the Cuban healthcare system, which affects thousands of citizens across the country.
