Eggplant Steak: A Cuban recipe to substitute pork

A Cuban creator on TikTok proposes eggplant steak as an economical and vegan alternative due to the high price of pork in Cuba.

Henry (@itss_henryyy_), a charismatic Cuban and TikTok content creator, has revolutionized social media with his vegan version of the classic Cuban steak: the eggplant steak.

Her recipe arrives amidst the relentless rise in meat prices in Cuba, showcasing that culinary creativity does not halt on the island.

"Since pork is a must, we take an eggplant and slice it up," he explains in his usual carefree style.

An economical and tasty alternative

The recipe is simple, accessible, and, most importantly, delicious. It all starts with a well-washed eggplant, cut into thin slices as if they were steaks. These are marinated with spices and salt.

Then, they are dipped in a mixture of flour and water, a type of creole tempura, to fry them in hot oil until they are nice and crispy.

Once they are golden brown, Henry adds a classic Cuban sofrito made with onion, garlic, pepper, tomato sauce, and oil. This final touch provides the intense flavor expected from a stewed steak.

More than a recipe, a creative adaptation

Although in other countries this dish is known as battered eggplant and is typically served with honey and pieces of strong-flavored cheese. In this Cuban version, the recipe takes on a more Creole character, preserving the spirit of our humble yet inventive kitchens.

It is important to note that, although it is called "bistec," this dish merely replaces pork in our imagination. Nevertheless, it is a vegan, nutritious, and affordable option, ideal for those looking for economical alternatives or maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

With this recipe, El Henry not only provides a practical solution to a daily problem, but also promotes a fun, tasty, and very Cuban approach to overcoming challenges.
