A young Cuban woman identified as Davely Morales, 21 years old, was brutally murdered by her stepfather on Friday night at her home on Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown, in Guyana.
The alleged murderer, Wispriey Alfonso, also a Cuban and 40 years old, attacked Morales with a bladed weapon and seriously injured his mother, Milaysi Rodríguez, 38 years old, before fleeing the scene and turning himself in to authorities.
According to official reports from the Guyana Police Force, the crime occurred around 7:00 p.m. in the apartment where the family, who had recently arrived from Cuba about a month ago, was residing as tenants.
Davely Morales worked as a sales representative and lived with her mother, her 9-year-old sister, and Alfonso in Lot 56 on Pike Street.
According to information published by local media, the horror began when a tenant in the building heard desperate screams coming from apartment number 1.
As she approached, she found the door ajar and saw Alfonso attacking Rodríguez with a butcher's axe in the living room. On the floor lay Davely, gravely injured, with visible cuts and profuse bleeding, as reported by News Room.
Despite the brutality of the attack, the young woman managed to get up and leave the apartment, but collapsed in the hallway, where she was found by the emergency teams.
The technicians from the Central Fire Station quickly arrived at the scene and confirmed Morales's death, while Rodríguez was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), where she remains hospitalized in critical condition with multiple stab wounds.
The preliminary examination revealed that Morales had deep lacerations on his hands, neck, and jaw. His body was transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where an autopsy was conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
In a shocking turn of events, Alfonso appeared just hours later at Kitty Police Station with the murder weapon, a butcher knife, locally known as a chopper, still stained with what appeared to be blood. He was immediately arrested and is currently cooperating with the homicide investigation opened by the Guyanese authorities.
So far, the police have not disclosed the motive for the attack but are continuing to investigate the events. The Cuban embassy in Guyana has not issued any public statements by the time of this report.
This new episode of violence has generated deep consternation among the Cuban community in Guyana, where many compatriots have settled in recent years, fleeing the crisis on the island. The case highlights the vulnerable conditions to which some migrants are exposed, particularly women and children.
One of the most recent cases occurred in April 2025, when José Aurelio Ramírez, a 54-year-old Cuban, was mortally stabbed while walking on Melanie Market Street in East Coast Demerara. The attack, which took place in front of a fellow countryman, left one suspect in custody and another on the run.
Months earlier, in October 2024, the young woman from Tunera, Yuni Zamora Castro, 25 years old, was murdered by her partner, known as “El Tío,” in their home in Georgetown. The attacker, a 60-year-old man, took his own life after the crime, which reports indicate was motivated by jealousy.
